Years ago, I was working in an office in Colorado and I had a secretary who happened to be African-American. She was and is one of the most pleasant people you could ever hope to meet. My wife and son and I would go to watch her son play at his high school football games and we all became very good friends.
So, as was and is our custom, we would send out Christmas cards during Christmastime. This particular secretary also made it a practice to send Christmas cards. In fact, I can say that one of my fondest memories of Christmas, as a young child, was seeing the Christmas cards that people would send to our home where I grew up in southern West Virginia.
On one particular Christmas, we received our Christmas card from my secretary. This particular card used the theme of angels singing in the sky and offering praises unto God. No problem. It is awesome to offer praise unto the Lord. Amen! Only one problem (at that time in my life), the angels were Black! I’m thinking aghast! How could she do it! How could she “so mess with” my narrow and my highly cultural concept of God, Jesus and Christmas!
That was many years ago. Theologically, it was probably one of the best things to ever happen to me. It forced me to begin to see God through the eyes of those of other cultures and other backgrounds. It forced me to begin to develop a Christian World View.
